my bedroom decorating formula

Most people redecorate a room by just swapping things out and hoping it comes together. New bedding here, a new lamp there, and then they stand back and wonder why the room still doesn't feel finished.

Here's the difference between a room that looks put together and one that just looks like a collection of things you liked at different points in your life: a repeatable framework. When you have a formula, every design decision has a reason.

This is the exact formula I use in my own bedroom, and it works in any room of your home.

The Formula

Every well-designed room needs four things:

1. Something Modern

This is what keeps the room feeling current and clean. Think sleek lines, updated lighting, or a contemporary piece of furniture. Modern elements give the space structure and keep it from feeling dated.

2. Something Vintage

Vintage pieces bring soul. An antique dresser, a thrifted mirror, an heirloom passed down through your family. These are the pieces that make a room feel like it has a history, because it does. A room with no vintage in it can feel like a showroom. A room with the right vintage piece feels like a home.

3. Something Personal

This is the element most people skip, and it's the one that matters most. Photos that mean something to you. Art your kids made. A found object from a trip that changed you. Personal pieces are what make the room yours instead of anyone's. No one else can replicate them, and that's the point.

4. Something Organic

Finally, bring in life. Plants, natural wood, linen, jute, stone. Organic elements soften a room and make it feel warm and breathable. Even one plant or a natural-fiber rug can shift the entire energy of a space.

When all four are in the room together, they balance each other. The modern keeps the vintage from feeling old. The personal keeps the whole thing from feeling staged. The organic ties it all back to something living.

Want to Take It Further?

Once you have the formula down, here are a few advanced moves that elevate a room from nice to designed.

Mix your patterns. The trick is to vary pattern type and scale. A large-scale floral with a small-scale stripe works. Two medium-scale florals fight each other.

Layer everything. Rugs over rugs, throws over bedding, art leaning behind objects. Layering is what makes a room feel intentional and inviting.

Vary your textures. Smooth, soft, woven, matte. Multiple textures make a room feel collected over time instead of staged all at once.

Carry a connector throughout your home. A color palette, a metal finish, a lighting style. A connector is what ties every room together into one cohesive story, so your home feels like it was designed on purpose, not room by room.

Your Turn

Save this formula for your next refresh. Walk into your bedroom and do a quick audit: do you have something modern, something vintage, something personal, and something organic? Whatever is missing is your starting point.

And if you want help putting this all together in your actual space, that is exactly what a Home Consultation Call is for.
